Informatory Signs: Meaning, IRC:67-2012 Category and Examples

Informatory signs are one of the four main sign types used on roads and highways worldwide, and TMR supplies the full range to MoRTH specifications

Informatory signs are road signs that give the driver useful information — the route ahead, destinations and distances, place names, and the facilities available nearby — instead of enforcing a rule or warning about a hazard. Under IRC:67-2012 they form a distinct sign category alongside regulatory (mandatory) signs and cautionary (warning) signs. Informatory signs are generally rectangular, with white legends and borders on a blue or green retroreflective background, and are sized and placed so that a driver can read and act on them before reaching a decision point.

Common Informatory Signs

Parking

Blue rectangular board with a white 'P' marking an authorised parking area.

Hospital

Directs drivers to a hospital and indicates a zone where horns should not be used.

Petrol / Fuel Pump

Marks a fuel station ahead, usually with the distance or an arrow.

First Aid Post

Indicates a first aid facility available near the highway.

Public Telephone

Marks an emergency or public telephone point on a highway stretch.

Eating Place / Rest Area

Identifies roadside restaurants, rest areas and driver facilities.

Place Identification

Names the town, village or landmark the driver is entering.

Resting Place & Toilets

Marks public conveniences and rest stops along the route.

Where Informatory Signs Are Used

  • National and state highways, ahead of junctions, service roads and facility exits
  • City and municipal roads for parking, hospital and public facility guidance
  • Industrial estates, ports, logistics parks and warehouse campuses
  • Hospital, campus and institutional roads where guidance signage is required
  • Toll plazas, rest areas and wayside amenities on expressways
  • Township, gated community and commercial complex internal roads

TMR Traffic Safety supplies and exports informatory signs worldwide, sourced from trusted manufacturers, on aluminium, aluminium composite panel or mild steel substrates, finished with Engineering Grade, High Intensity Prismatic or Diamond Grade retroreflective sheeting to suit the road class. Sizes, legends and multilingual text are produced to your drawing while staying within IRC:67-2012 and MoRTH requirements. Call +91 81234 40049 for a quote on informatory signage.

Traffic Signages — Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our traffic signages

TMR Traffic Safety supplies and exports MoRTH-compliant road signs worldwide, sourced from trusted manufacturers. Every sign is produced to MoRTH specifications and the IRC:67-2012, IRC:79-2019 and IS:67-2013 standards, using 3M retroreflective sheeting verified with a reflectometer. We supply regulatory, cautionary, highway direction, informatory and photoluminescent signs to customers worldwide — call +91 81234 40049 for a quote.
MoRTH compliant traffic signages are road signs manufactured according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) specifications. Compliance means adhering to IS:67-2013 and IRC:67-2012 for sign size, colour, retroreflectivity and placement, and to IRC:79-2019 for delineators and highway guidance. TMR Traffic Safety supplies every sign built to these codes, so the signage is accepted on highway, road authority and municipal projects.
Informatory signs are road signs that give drivers information rather than an order or a warning — route and destination guidance, distances, place names and the location of facilities such as parking, hospitals, fuel pumps, first aid posts, public telephones and rest areas. Under IRC:67-2012 they are a separate category from regulatory (mandatory) and cautionary (warning) signs, and are usually rectangular with white legends on a blue or green retroreflective background. TMR Traffic Safety supplies informatory signs to MoRTH specifications in Engineering Grade, High Intensity Prismatic and Diamond Grade sheeting.
Mandatory traffic signs are the signs a road user is legally required to obey. They are defined under IRC:67-2012 and IS:67-2013 and include the stop sign, give way, speed limit, no entry, one way, no parking, no overtaking and no horn signs. Most are circular with a red border, while the stop sign is octagonal and red and the give way sign is an inverted triangle. TMR Traffic Safety supplies the full range of mandatory and regulatory signs in 600mm, 750mm and 900mm sizes for urban roads, state highways and national highways worldwide.
Engineering Grade (Type I) offers 70-100 cd/lx/m² reflectivity with a 5-7 year lifespan, suitable for low-traffic areas. Diamond Grade (Type V/IX) provides 400+ cd/lx/m² reflectivity with 10-12+ year durability, ideal for high-speed highways and critical safety zones.
The lifespan of traffic signages depends on the reflective grade used. Engineering Grade signs last 5-7 years, High Intensity Prismatic signs last 7-10 years, and Diamond Grade signs last 10-12 years even under harsh weather conditions including extreme heat, monsoons, and UV exposure.
Yes, TMR Traffic Safety offers complete customization including custom sizes, colors, graphics, and branding. Working with trusted manufacturers, we can arrange signs with company logos, custom messages, and unique shapes while maintaining MoRTH/IRC compliance.
Standard delivery time for bulk orders is 7-15 days depending on quantity and customization requirements. For urgent requirements, we offer expedited supply with 48-72 hour turnaround for critical projects. Contact us at +91 81234 40049 for specific timelines.
